Silent Witness / Phoenix Police
PHOENIX -- Below is a release by the Phoenix Police Department regarding an attempted sexual assault:
The crime occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. when the victim was driving in the area of 59th Avenue and Glendale. The suspects struck her vehicle with their own, then fired a weapon at her. As she attempted to flee they followed her down the access road at 59th Avenue and Campbell where she entered a dead end. Her car was blocked in and the suspects forcibly pulled her from her car and tried to force her into their van. She fought them and was subsequently thrown to the ground and her clothes partially removed. The suspects attempted to sexually assault her and she continued to fight as she was being physically assaulted. She broke free and was confronted by the second suspect who was in the victim's vehicle. It was at this time that investigators believe the suspects were interrupted by nearby citizens and fled the crime scene in their own vehicle.
The victim sustained serious, but not life threatening injuries.

The alley in Robbinsdale is brighter than most, but Tuesday night it was the scene of an assault. What makes this attack different from most is the victim: Hennepin County Board of Commissioners Chair Mike Opat.
"Saw two guys approaching me and kind of gave 'em a nod. I didn't have any reason to suspect them. I knew they didn't live in the neighborhood, but I certainly didn't think I was gonna get jumped, but that's what happened."
In a flash, Opat found himself being punched and kicked under the barrel of a sawed-off shotgun, right behind his own house. 2 days later, Opat shakes his head. "It's just an indication of how far the random violence epidemic has gone. It's a good neighborhood. and it's very well patrolled by Robbinsdale and, but, it, it's I guess it shows that for some of these brazen punks, they'll go anywhere."
Because of Opat's involvement, the crime attracted larger media and public attention. Sergeant Garcia says homeowners with alleys behind can be safer by adding lights that shine into darker alleys and trimming overgrown brush that could be a hiding spot for would-be attackers. In his case, Opat insists there was as light from his garage and others. He had no trouble seeing his attackers, only in judging their intentions.
In Opat's case, the former Corrections Officer felt there came a moment when he feared that robbery was not his attacker's intent. Knocked to the ground, he grabbed for the barrel of the shotgun."I don't know if it was the wisest course of action, but in this particular case it worked. I wasn't interested in my wallet or my phone or any of that material things. I was interested in my life, when I was ordered to lay face down, I took the opportunity to grab the gun. I didn't get it away, but I was able to pull myself up and take off down the alley and screamed to my neighbors and they came out and the police showed up shortly."

Mom Fights Off Shark with Camera, Saves Kids

A woman bitten by a shark as she waded in knee-deep water at a remote Australian holiday beach told Friday how she fought off the predator with her camera to stop it from turning on her children.
She was carrying her three-year-old son Ethan at the time of the attack, and her 13-year-old son Brandon was walking alongside.
"I started hitting it with my camera and shaking my leg trying to get it off," Cooke told reporters on Friday from a hospital bed in Perth.
"At first I thought something had just hit me, not bitten me," she said. "It let go. I took a couple of steps and fell into the water because my leg was pretty bad. As I fell into the water the sea just turned to blood," she said.
Fear for children
Cooke said she feared the shark might attack her children.
"Brandon came running over and I said to him "take Ethan' and he grabbed Ethan and ran back to shore."
Cooke suffered severe wounds to her calf and could lose her foot. Experts said a reef shark might have been to blame for the attack.
The beach is famous for its shallow, fringing corals and is popular with tourists visiting the Ningaloo reef marine park, which draws humpback whales, dolphins and dugongs.
Australia, where sharks are protected, has had a number of shark attacks in the past year.
In January, an abalone diver was partly swallowed head-first by a Great White Shark off the southeastern coast, but managed to fight his way free, suffering a broken nose and bite marks.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY Authorities are searching for a suspect who attacked and robbed man at his residence Sunday.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Ronnie Willis said the attack happened sometime after 3:30 p.m. at a residence on U.S. 72 near the Elgin community.
Willis said the victim sustained a small cut on his hand.
The 80-year-old victim said he still fears for his safety. He agreed to talk to the TimesDaily on condition that he's not identified.
He said he was sitting in a recliner watching a ball game when he heard the door bell ring.
"It rang twice, and I was expecting someone, so I got up, but before I got to the door he met me in the kitchen," he said. "He was wearing a hood and mask and had a butcher knife. He came in, showed me that butcher knife and said he wanted money. I knew he meant business."
He said the robber grabbed his wallet from his pants pocket, took some of the money and then threw the wallet down.
"I grabbed him, and he had that doggone butcher knife and it cut my hand," he said. "I hung on to him and tried to drag him against the wall. I was getting him the best I could. We were in the kitchen wrestling around; I was afraid he was going to stab me in the belly with that knife."
The victim said everything happened so quickly that he didn't have time to think about getting hurt.

(08/25/07 -- DUNN, N.C.) - A couple of Sampson County teenagers are behind bars after trying to rob a well-known hardware store in Dunn, and family members are calling the store's 81-year-old owner a hero.
Richard Carr owns the hardware store.
He got quite a scare Thursday when a gunman tried to rob him, but Carr fought back and one of the 15-year-old teenagers fled.
Police caught up with him a few blocks away. They say the other one never left the store.
Carr, who has owned the store for 50 years, said he doesn't take kindly to someone trying to rob him.
"well, he had the gun I tried to get it from him," Carr said. "I didn't know whether it was loaded or not, so out of fear, we just tussled."
Both teens are facing attempted armed robbery and attempted murder charges.
